Science

At the Brunts Academy, our curriculum aims to develop intellectual and practical skills which will allow students to enjoy, explore and investigate the world of science. Students will develop a full understanding and appreciation of science phenomena, the nature of the theories explaining these, and the procedures of scientific investigation.

Key Stage 3

Students follow the National Curriculum for science ensuring a balance of the three main science specialisms; Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The carefully planned, spiral curriculum reviews and builds on the knowledge and understanding from KS2 towards GCSE. Our curriculum is designed to reflect the needs of our students within our local community. Practical sessions incorporate opportunities for hands-on experience and the development of scientific enquiry skills. We encourage students to be curious and ask questions about the world around them, developing their scientific thinking to understand the relevance, uses and implications of science.

During Key Stage 3, students will also have the opportunity to enrich their experience beyond the science National Curriculum. These include various workshops, trips and interactions with experts and local charities. This will enable the students develop a sense of awe of wonder, appreciation of scientific phenomena and its vitality to the world’s future prosperity.

Key Stage 4

Our students experience a wide breadth and depth of scientific knowledge across the science specialisms whilst following the AQA Trilogy or Triple science specifications. Each topic strand is linked intrinsically to prior KS3 knowledge and skills, gradually building in terms of complexity and application of understanding. Our aim is that all students should leave Brunts Academy being able to understand and explain the scientific world around them and, more importantly, be equipped with the skills to problem-solve and critically evaluate the ‘big’ moral questions in life.

Please note: Curriculum plans are constantly under review and are re-sequenced following key assessment points to ensure any gaps in knowledge and understanding are addressed.
